Itmad Ud Daulah

Overview

Itmad ud Daulah is a tomb that was built between 1622 and 1628 AD by Nur Jahan in the memory of her father Ghiasud-Din-Beg. It is one of the famous monuments of Agra and is one of the first marble Mughal monuments . It features splendid use of pietra dura i.e. the inlay work done in the marble

Many of the people think that Itimad-ud-Daulah's tomb acts as the base for ShahJahan who built the Taj Mahal. One of the most important features of the tomb is that instead of a dome there is a closed kiosk at the top.

Historical Significance

The history behind the making of the tomb is as interesting as the tomb itself. A poor merchant from Persia named Ghiyas-ud-Din came to India and became the chief minister of the Mughal emperor Jehangir. His daughter Nur Jahan was later married to the emperor and when Ghiyas-ud-Din died in 1622, Nur Jahan got this mausoleum made.

The tomb is full of features that were later included in the construction of the Taj Mahal. The splendid carvings that are found in this tomb are said to be even better than those found in the Taj Mahal. The most important thing to be noted in this monument is that it is a structure that was built according to the Central Asian pattern and hence, it includes waterways, gates, gardens and even paths.

Features

There are many facilities provided to the domestic and the international tourists when they reach the tomb. The area is well connected to the other parts of the country through the various modes of transportation like air and roadways and even provides excellent accommodation facilities to the tourists.
