Overview
Sikandra is the place where the tomb of the great Mughal emperor Akbar is located. It is situated just three kilometers away from the main city of Agra. The tomb at Sikandra is a huge arched gateway in the midst of lush green lawns where one can see deer grazing.
The famous gateway is known as the Buland Darvaza and has strikingly bold decorations with its large mosaic patterns. The tomb of Akbar is pyramid shaped and has an open terrace on the top.

Historical significance
The construction of the fort was originally begun by Akbar itself during his reign. But the structure was completed by his son Jehangir after the death of his father. Jehangir, during the completion of his father’s project, however made lots of changes in the design of the original building and the result was nothing short of impressive.
The building was designed in the Indo-Saracenic style. Some of the design features are similar to that of the design of the Taj Mahal which was built much later.
Striking Features
The most striking feature of the place is definitely the splendid gateway with its four minarets that have been intricately carved. The striking inlay of white marble on the red sandstone is also grand. Another notable feature here is the portico in front of the grave in the basement. It is covered with beautiful stucco paintings.

The outlaying garden which is laid out in the Char Bagh style is yet another attraction of the place. The tomb of Mariam, Jehangir’s mother, is also located close to the imposing red sandstone building.
