Historical significance
The Taj Mahal, more than anything, symbolizes the love Shah Jahan had for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The construction of the building was started in 1631 after the demise of Mumtaz Mahal
Records say that around 20,000 laborers were engaged in the construction of the huge monument. It is ironic that this eternal tribute that Shah Jahan built for his wife was later the place where he was imprisoned by his own son Aurangazeb. On his death the emperor was laid to rest here.
Striking Features
The most striking feature about the Taj Mahal is the bright white shine of the building. The dome shaped top along with the four towers surrounding it is indeed the perfect tribute to everlasting love and romance. Tourists are not allowed to enter the main mausoleum since it might damage the tomb. Enormous care is taken to protect and preserve this heritage site. People are not even allowed to wear their footwear inside the building. However an exact replica of the inside has been made for the travelers. The garden around the Taj Mahal is also a fantastic view.
