Ladakh, located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, has many historical monasteries. These monasteries are known as Gompas where in several Buddhist monks and nuns dwell, practice and study their Buddhist religion. Hemis Gompa is one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh which was built in the year 1630. One can admire several Thangka paintings and beautiful frescoes on the walls of this monastery. Tse Che festival is one of the famous festivals celebrated by the monks of Hemis Gompas.
This is the festival that commemorates the anniversary of Padmasamdhava the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. Several dancers wearing colorful masks represent the good and evil characters in Mahayana Buddhism.
Some of the other famous Monasteries in Ladakh are the Shanti Stupa, Sankar Gompa, Namgyal Tsemo Gompa, Leh Palace, Stok Palace, Lamayuru Monastery, Shey Monastery, Alchi Gompa, Spituk Monastery, Likir Monastery and the Thiksey Monastery. His Holiness the Dalai Lama inaugurated the Shanti Stupa monastery in the year 1985.
Namgyal Tsemo Gompa has in store several historical collections of Buddhist manuscripts, art and images of Buddha. The Stok Palace Gompa also has several collections of jewelry, weapons, articrafts and Buddhist art. Thiksey Monastery is famous for its annual festival which is being held on the 17th and 19th of the 12th month according to Tibetan Buddhist calendar.
