Himachal Pradesh is located in the lap of the Himalayan region. It is one of the most beautiful states in northern India. Himachal Pradesh is not only known for its icy mountains, dense foliage, and adventure sports but also for its serene and beautiful lakes. There are many lakes in Himachal to enhance its beauty.
Lakes in Himachal Pradesh are known for its serenity and beauty, which in turn attracts a lot of tourists. Some lakes in Himachal Pradesh are held as sacred. The best example is that of Renuka Lake.
It is believed that this lake takes the shape of Renuka (Goddess in Hindu Mythology). It is located in the district of Sirmaur. Rewalsar Lake is situated at an altitude of 1360 meters above the sea level and 24 kms from the town of Mandi. It is a pious lake for Buddhists. This lake is also popular for its floating island, which is believed as the home for the spirit of Padamasambhava.
There are many other lakes in Himachal Pradesh, which are divided into the categories on the basis of their location and altitude. Few low altitude lakes are - Macchial and Renuka Lake. On the other hand mid altitude lakes are - Dal, Rewalsar, Kareri, Kumarwah, Khajjiar and Prashar Lake.
High altitude lakes like - Nako, Suraj Tal, Prashar Lake, Chandra, Brighu, Dashair, Seruvalsar, Ghadhasaru, Manimahesh (4080 m), Mahakali, Lama Dal and Chander Naun.
There are also many reservoirs in Himachal Pradesh like Maharana Pratap Sagar, Gobind Sagar and Pandoh Lake. Theses reservoirs and lakes in Himachal Pradesh are surrounded by green foliage and dense forests. In some lakes, fishing and boating are allowed for tourists.
