Overview
Rajasthan is one of the largest states in India. Located in the northwestern side of India, the major portion of the Thar dessert is in Rajasthan. Hence the state is also known as the dessert state. The state was first occupied by different clans in around 700 AD. Before that, Rajasthan was part of different republics like the Mauryans, Malavas, Kushans, Huns, and Guptas etc. The Rajput clan invaded Rajasthan in the beginning of the 8th century.

Around 1200 AD the state of Rajasthan came under the rule of Muslim rulers. Under their rein the principle centers of power in Rajasthan was Nagaur and Ajmer. In the beginning of the 13th century, the most powerful in Rajasthan was Mewar. Until the Mughals came into Rajasthan, the state was never united politically. It was during Akbar's rein that Rajasthan for the first time became a single political entity. The Mughal rein came to an end in the 18th century. It was caused due to the penetration of the Maratha clan into the state. This brought about a lot of political turmoil in the state of Rajasthan.
