Overview
Himachal Pradesh is located in the western Himalayan Belt of Northern India. Jammu and Kashmir lies to its north, Uttar Pradesh lies to its south east where as the mountainous region of Tibet lies to its northeast and to its south are the plains of Punjab and Haryana. In the ancient times small nations called Janapadas formed the area of Himachal Pradesh. These nations belonged to the Trigarta, Kulindas, Gobdika, Audumbras, Kuluta and Yugandhar. Later came the prominence of Mauryans and among them was Chandragupta who captured most of these small nations and formed a kingdom. After Mauryans came the Thakurs and the Ranas who built their states smaller in size compared to the ancient immigrants. After the Mauryan period came the period of Medieval.
These people had larger states namely Kangra, Mandi, Chamba and Kullu. Then came the period of foreign invaders and among them were Muhammad Tughlaq, Mahmud of Ghazni and Firoz Shah Tughlaq. But in the 16th century Mughal influence was beginning to be felt in Kangra and Chamba. In the 18th century the period of Sansar Chand arrived, he was one of the most powerful rulers and also a mighty figure who ruled this area for a long period.
In 1857 saw most of the rulers from the numerous states of Himachal Pradesh taking help from the British. States like Chamba, Kangra, Mandi and Suket contributed their money and men in support for the British during the First World War.
The first change came in the year 1914 when people started to participate in several freedom movements of India. On the 26th January 1950 Himachal Pradesh became the C state of India and on 1st November 1956 it was declared as a Union Territory. Finally in the year 1970 Himachal Pradesh became the 18th state of India.
