Climate of Jammu and Kashmir

The climate of Jammu and Kashmir is quite different from the other states of India as the state is at a high altitude of 395 meters to 6910 meters above the sea level. Jammu and Kashmir stretches between 32.17 degree North to 36.58 degree North. The Jammu province has hot plains the Ladakh province has the coldest tableland. The different weather conditions in the Climate of Jammu and Kashmir are the result of the obstruction of the moisture laden winds by the lofty mountains like the Karakoram, the Zanskar and the Pirpanjal.

The Climate of Jammu and Kashmir in summer is mild due to the rainfall that occurs on the outer hills and plains. The temperature falls due to the rainfall in the forests of the hills as the moisture laden winds are struck by the high peaks. Thus, the places like Gulmarg and Pahalgaon have milder weather than Sopore and Srinagar. The valley is on the higher altitude so the climate is milder than that of the outer plains. The Mediterranean winds cause snowfall in the valet in winter.

The altitude of the mountains and valleys in the middle zone is the determining factor of the climate of Jammu and Kashmir in these regions. Summers are mild but short. Winters are cold and dry and the level of coolness increases with the rising altitude and ultimately snowfalls occur in the higher mountain ranges.

Climate of Jammu and Kashmir can be divided roughly into six seasons each of 2 months of duration. Summers are from the middle of May to the middle of July. Just before summers is the spring which lasts from mid-March to mid-May. There is heavy rainfall during the season of spring. Often landslides also occur during this season.
