Overview
Situated at an altitude of 1,830 meters above the sea level is the picturesque city Ranikhet in the Almora district. The place gets its name after the queen of King Sudher Deve of the 12th century. It means the 'field of the queen'. Covered with pines and oaks, Ranikhet offers a splendid view of the snow capped mountains to its North. Summary
The Hera Khan temple is one of famous tourist attractions in Ranikhet. It is dedicated to the Hindu Saint Hera Khan who died in 1984. The temple is made up of marble and faces a beautiful garden. Other temples that are a part of the tourist attractions in Ranikhet are the Jhula Devi temple and the temples of Binsar Mahadev and Lord Rama that are 19 kilometers away. It is said that once a month a leopard visits the Jhula Devi temple but is visible only to the priest.
One of the highest golf courses in the world is situated here. Named Uphat, the golf course was initially a cross country race track built by a British cavalry officer. Beyond the golf course is a temple of Kalika Devi. Also, there is a forest nursery owned by the government. Majhkhali is situated further along the same road which offers a spectacular view of the snow capped mountains.
Fruit lovers are recommended to visit Chaubatia, one of the major tourist attractions in Ranikhet. Originally a sanatorium for the British troops, the place now houses a government fruit garden and research station which grows around 200 different varieties of fruits. The artificial Lake Bhaludam is situated at a distance of 3 kilometers from this place.
