Chail Sanctuary

The Chail Sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh is the heavenly retreat for the nature lovers and wildlife buffs as it is situated in the districts of Shimla. In the year 1976, this shrouded Oak and Deodar forest in Chail, which was rich in flora and fauna was declared as a wildlife sanctuary. One can explore the expansive acres of dense woodlands and greenery of the Chail Sanctuary which is unspoilt by the pollution and crowds.

Situated at the foothills of the great Himalayan peaks and spread over an area of 110 sq kms this wildlife sanctuary takes in a vast forest cover. Besides birds and animals one of the major attractions of this sanctuary is its Chir Pheasant Breeding Farm. This Chir Pheasant Breeding and Rehabilitation programme was started in the year 1988.

Chail Sanctuary's grassland has some small stretches of Oak, Robinia, Pine and Cedar. Chail Sanctuary comprises of mainly large mammals which include the Indian Muntjac, Leopard, Rhesus Macaque and Goral Crested Porcupine.

Silver White Oak, Indian Hare, Barking Deer, Himalayan Black Bear, Common Langur, European Red Deer, Black-Naped Hare, Wild Boar, Common Giant, Pheasants, Kashmiri Flying Squirrels, Yellow Throated Marten and Sambar are some of the other species found in this sanctuary.

Kalijin and Barking Deers are among the major tourist attractions in this Sanctuary. This Sanctuary is also popular for several expeditions like trekking for the adventure freaks. The most common route amongst trekkers is from Chail to Jhajja and Chail to Gaura. Jeep Safari is abandoned in order to safe guard the birds and animals in the sanctuary.

Chail Sanctuary is not far away from the town of Chail and the most famous hill station Shimla. It is accessible at a distance of about 3 kms form Chail and 40 kms from Shimla. The airport and the railway station are also nearby as they are situated at an easy distance from the town of Chail.
