Overview
The Maharana Pratap Sagar Sanctuary is commonly called as the Pong dam. The reservoir has been converted to a Bird sanctuary. The reservoir dam is 42 kms in length and 2 kms in width on the Beas River.
The Mahrana Pratap Sagar Sanctuary place is now a wildlife sanctuary covering an area of about 45,000 hectares. More than 200 species of migratory find there way to this Sanctuary. The reservoir was declared as a bird sanctuary in 1983.The Maharana Pratap Sagar Sanctuary is near the places like Masroor, patrhankot and nurpur. The nearest railway station is Muskerian which is about 30 kms from here. Gaggal is the nearest airport that lies at a distance of 40 kms.
27 species and sub species of fishes have been spotted in the sanctuary’s lake. The Directorate of Mountaineering and Allied sports have a branch here. Summary
The sanctuary is nestled amidst the lush green valleys and the snowy Dhauladhar range. Set against a backdrop of snow clad peaks and alpine forests; the sanctuary has a serene lake within it that attracts tourists from all over the world. The commonly found birds are black headed gulls, plovers, black stork, Goose, terns, ducks, water fowl and egrets. The concentration of birds is highest during the months of November to March.
The land segment of the sanctuary is inhabited by barking dear, wild boar leopard and sambars.
