Renuka Sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh

Renuka Sanctuary is located in Renuka which is in Nahan, the district of Sirmour in the state of Himachal Pradesh. This park covers an area about 402, 80 hectares and it comprises of Renuka Reserve Forest which is also been declared as Abhayaranya. Around 300 hectares of area in the sanctuary is been declared as the buffer belt.

Renukaji Zoo was initially commenced in the year 1957 with quite a few deserted and strayed animals. The first animal brought to this sanctuary was the male spotted deer which was named Moti.

There is a lake and few temples in Renuka which attract quite a few visitors to this area. Catchments and Forests of this lake add to its never ending beauty and magnetism.

Renuka sanctuary is home to several wild species such as spotted deer, peacocks, lion tailed macaques, large grey Indian antelope, Asiatic lions, Himalayan Black Bears, Jackal, Jungle Cat, Green Pigeons, Plam Civet, Hare, Blue Jay, Porcupine, Black Partridge, scarlet minivet, hill crow, Drongos, Common Coots, Bulbul, Barking deer and many more. The main vegetation inside this sanctuary comprises of Shisham, Cordia, Carrie, Khair, Terminalia, Anogeissus and Lucinea.

There's a small aviary in the sanctuary that houses a variety of peacocks, red jungle fowl, water birds and black pheasant. One can also come across thousands of fluttering gorgeous butterflies.

Even there is a lion safari zoo which is run by the forest department of Shimla and provides an armored van in which one can travel along the zoo. At the zoo one can come across a number of well bred lions.

For refreshment the forest department runs a tourist bungalow where visitors can relax and even cater themselves in the cafeteria located in the bungalow. To reach this sanctuary there are several busses which leave from Nahan and goes to Dadahu every hour. Tourist can reach this sanctuary by walking about 40 minutes from Dadahu.
